dinner gathering Later, when Benny shows over and confronts Kevin about his earlier encounter with the dry cleaner, Kevin is forced to share the news that he has phoned Stanford and sold the company to pay Nina's tuition.

Benny and Nina walk out after Nina refuses the money out of outrage that he went behind her back, and Kevin encourages the other guests to go as well. Along with Benny and Nina, Usnavi and Vanessa go on their date to the club.

Usnavi exhibits excessive nervousness and aloofness at the club, and Vanessa dances with other men to enrage him. Usnavi attempts to make his new partner envious by finding his own partner ("The Club"). Usnavi and Vanessa become separated as a result of the sudden loss of power in the area.

Benny and Kevin go back to the taxi firm to control the cars and cabs while Sonny and Graffiti Pete light fireworks to illuminate the neighborhood. Usnavi and Vanessa cross paths and debate over going on a date; Vanessa violently rejects him, and they both return home ("Blackout").

In Usnavi's apartment, Nina and the salon ladies play bingo and enjoy the fireworks. As she passes away in her bed from a heart attack brought on by the summer heat, Abuela remembers her youth in poverty in Cuba and how she and her mother overcame obstacles to immigrate to New York ("Paciencia Y Fe"). Usnavi contacts the emergency hotline after finding her unresponsive, but it is already too late. The entire community gathers to celebrate her life and express their grief at her demise ("Alabanza").

Nina discovers that Sonny cannot attend college because he is an unauthorized immigrant at a local DACA rally. She decides to return to school to figure out how to provide undocumented kids like Sonny a chance at a better life.

Kevin is delighted to hear that she has outperformed him and urges her to continue with her plans, advising her to ignore any unfavorable remarks that others may have about her.

Usnavi finds Vanessa's rental application in the trash after she had thrown it away. He asks Daniela to co-sign on Vanessa's application while she is packing up and getting ready to move her business. Daniela then rallies the block into celebrating their shared Latin culture, to her dismay at the block's negative sentiments regarding the blackout and Abuela's demise.

The entire neighborhood joins in ("Carnaval Del Barrio"). Usnavi persuades Vanessa and Sonny to put their anxieties aside and savor the moment when the blackout finally comes to an end.

Nina has finished preparing to return to Stanford a month later, and she and Benny decide to continue their long-distance romance. They ultimately share a kiss as Benny declares his belief in her once more and pledges to travel to California to be with her ("When The Sun Goes Down").

Usnavi learns that Abuela had the winning lottery ticket and had given it to him as he completed getting ready to go for the Dominican Republic the next day. After learning that Usnavi persuaded Daniela to co-sign her lease, Vanessa arrives and has a flirtatious conversation with him.

She also gave him a bottle of champagne as a thank-you gift. Usnavi denies her suggestion to stay, despite her gentle suggestion. She finally kisses him in frustration and regrets that it took her so long to recognize her feelings for him ("Champagne").

Usnavi then pays a visit to Alejandro and Sonny, handing him the winning ticket and instructing him to use it to cover Sonny's legal expenses while he submits a request for paperwork. Usnavi encounters Vanessa while taking one final stroll through the neighborhood the following morning.

She brings him to the location of his former bodega and introduces him to a new clothing line she designed the night before after being inspired by Graffiti Pete's paint rags. Where Usnavi's father's old company had stood, Graffiti Pete created two murals on the beach wall: one honoring Abuela Claudia and her catchphrase "Paciencia y fe," and the other paying tribute to her (Patience and Faith).

After having a realization, Usnavi urges Sonny and Pete to inform the neighborhood of his choice to remain. Returning to the present, Usnavi reveals that the beach he is describing is the new store he and Vanessa constructed together, that he married Vanessa, and that one of their children is Usnavi's daughter.

The movie closes with Usnavi, Vanessa, and their daughter dancing with the other residents of the neighborhood, and Usnavi from the past acknowledging the community as his actual home ("Finale").

In a post-credits scene, Piraguero offers the Mister Softee truck driver a piragua as he rejoices over the influx of customers now that the Mister Softee truck has broken down.
